6/12 Cavity partially filled in           Return to MSR&LHA Home page

A view of the finished excavation. Before grinding was commenced on the journal box pedestal, the defect appeared to simply be a crack, possibly there the day it was cast, but the decision was made to grind it out and fix it . Possibly a bad choice, as the second grinding was started, a very porous , rotten inclusion was exposed, and with every turn of the grinding wheel things appeared to be going from bad to worse. Eventually about 90% of the bad material was removed, leaving the cavity seen in these two shots to be brazed shut to complete the repair. Brazing on large castings is not fun, as one most usually ends up with water blisters on at least on at least one hand. Photo by Bill Liebman.
